The town of Littleton was officially established in 1890, just four years after Colorado achieved Statehood. Littleton can be traced back to an engineer named Richard Sullivan Little. Little came to the area in order to work on plan to distribute water throughout the region, a necessity as a result of the 1859 boom from the Pikes Peak gold rush. This was a time that also brought farms and businesses to support the miners, all of which needed access to a consistent source of water. Little brought his engineering skills to a series of ditches to serve the needs of a growing Denver.
Little settled what is now present-day Littleton, starting a farm with his wife, Angeline who joined him in 1862. The couple would eventually start Rough and Ready Flour Mill with neighbors. 10 years later, the Littles would create the village of Littleton by subdividing their land. When the town was established, there were 245 residents, churches, a hotel and schools-all of which can be traced to the growth brought about by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad which had been operating in the area for five years.
Littleton celebrated its centennial in 1990 with a population of over 33,000 residents. The evolution of industry in the town has gone from agriculture to electronics and munitions, to aerospace and manufacturing leading to a growth spurt in the mid 20th century that continues to fuel the economy to this day.
Little celebrated the 125th anniversary of its founding in 2015 with a population of over 45,000 people.
